Anthony Rietl, PhD

Coastal Ecologist

Our world is defined by myth, by stories. In my work, I tell the story of coastal change from the individual organism to the landscape, and investigate the feedbacks between plant communities and the abiotic and biotic environment that shape ecosystem functioning. In the grand infinite play of evolution, biological, physical, and anthropogenic forces shape the world, each force acting upon the other. This story has no arc, no end, only the endless interplay between life, rock, soil, and water.

I am currently a Senior Scientist at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife
